Course Description

This course ties the worldview of 12 key thinkers to cinema and music from the post-modern era of humanistic despair.  A handful of seminal authors introduced in our Great Books series are examined in more detail with special emphasis given to their impact on popular culture.  Using a game format, students are transformed from passive consumers of post-modern movies and music to active critics able to discern the underlying philosophies.   These include the influence of humanism, eastern religion, Islam, Gnostic mystery religions of “the Synagogue of Satan,” and much more.

The textbook — “Worldviews In Conflict” and Teacher’s Guide by Keven Swanson — devotes a chapter to each of 12 philosophical “pied-pipers.”  Students are required to match 17 influential movies — Matrix, Hunger Games, etc — with the philosopher whose worldview they represent.  Likewise, for popular songs such as Mack the Knife, Imagine, and Disturbia.  They are also required to write a critical review of several of their own selections.
